Overview

This JD covers the Registered Nurse Specialty Leader. The Specialty Leader will act as the liaison between surgeons, staff, vendor sales representative, Business Analyst and SPD. They will have direct accountability to assist in specialty education and training, cost containment, customer service and patient safety. This position will be actively involved in achieving Northern Arizona Healthcare's mission. The Registered Nurse Specialty Leader must abide by and follow expectations of a Registered Nurse in the Operating Room. The Registered Nurse Specialty Leader provides leadership for their specialty, will be the subject matter expert ensuring regulatory standards are followed. They will serve as a preceptor, and be an active member of the healthcare team. The nurse practices within the ANA Scope of Practice, AORN standards and regulations, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the standards of his/her specialty.


Staffing Requirements:
**Specialty Lead RN is Required to have 24 hour call.**
* Team Lead as needed - responsible/coordinate Core Techs, RN's, Scrub Techs assignments and general direction. The LSO will be exempt from this duty.
* Sign up in specialty as staff RN one day week.
* Office one day week
* Call/holiday required

Responsibilities

Specialty Leader Equipment and Instrumentation
* Coordinating of maintenance, repairs and purchases.

* Capital request, obtaining quotes.

* Submission of new equipment request to Application Specialist.

* Coordinate trials w/Educator and Vendor.

* Manage and communicate recalls to physicians and OR Team.

 

Specialty Leader Inservice Education
* Coordinate staff education with the Unit Based Educator.

* Updates changes in communication book.

* Provide education and in-services as needed.

* Present specialty education at a minimum annually.

* Competencies and training.

* Precept new to specialty training and facilitate staff education.

* Creates/collaborates to develop and maintain policy and procedure.

 

Specialty Leader Administration
* Coordinate and collaborate with Charge Nurses on staff assignments.

* Maintain staffing and skill mix for specialty.

* Check email daily.

* Audits as necessary i.e. time out.

* Policy and procedure, algorithm creation for any new equipment, etc.

* Ongoing communication with the Application specialist on procedure modifications and additions.

* Maintain expertise in specialty area, working in specialty as staff RN.

* Ensure appropriate operation and maintenance of specialty equipment to provide safe patient care.

* Act as a resource person for staff and physicians.

* Work in coordination with SPD Liaisons/SPD to keep area clean, labeled and organized.

* Check outdates, delegate as necessary.

* Meet with Business Manager/Clinical Manager as needed.

* Obtain sign off for evaluated/trial products from surgeons.

* Manage and communicate product recall alerts to affected Physician Groups and staff.

* Update preference cards/create default settings in Surginet.

* Confer with GPO/OR Pack Manager configurations.

* Respond to ORPEC/Manager as needed for agenda items.

* Cost per case analysis and data for MSVAT and ORPEC.

* Attend at least (75%) specialty leader meetings.

* Arrange coverage for specialty during PTO, absence.

* Attends training, conferences and seminars as needed.

* Incorporate and monitor smoke evac policy in specialty service.

* Evaluates processes with specialty to assure through put, turnovers, surgeon/staff satisfaction.

* Efficiency meets customers expectations.

* Will play an active role in providing feedback for annual evaluations.

 

Patient Care
* Assesses the needs and conditions of assigned patients by gathering relevant patient health information.

* Identifies outcomes, develops a plan of care individualized to the patient and/or situation, and implements the identified plan appropriate for the attainment of the expected outcomes.

* Assesses patients progress toward the attainment of outcomes and revises/updates diagnoses, outcomes and plans of care as appropriate.

* Provides a patient experience by providing quality & safe patient care (as described above) and by respecting patients privacy, and treating all patients, family members, and guests, as well as other associates, with dignity, respect, and compassion.

* Evaluates patient conditions frequently and adapts plans of care appropriately.

* Demonstrates safe intra-operative care in regards to positioning, transfer, body mechanics, thermoregulation, specimen handling, medication handling, and support of anesthesia provider and surgeon.

* Demonstrates aseptic technique and ability to maintain a sterile field and uses principles of disinfection, sterilization, and infection control techniques.

* Demonstrates proficiency with patient care in terms of equipment, instrumentation, supplies and able to respond to changes in patient condition necessitating emergency equipment or supplies.

* Collaborates with physicians and other health care professionals while performing surgery on patients.

* Registered Nurse First Assistant - is specially trained to serve as a surgical first assistant by directly assisting the surgeon with controlling bleeding, providing wound exposure, suturing, and other surgical tasks. The RNFA may also provide other advanced assistance such as mobilizing the tissue, positioning the patient, and directing other surgical staff.


Education

* Participates in the mentoring and education of new hires and students.


Administrative
* Demonstrates accuracy of document of assessments, interventions and patient responses.

* Facilitates efficient room turnovers as a float RN, circulating nurses or scrub nurse as evident by appropriate case and patient preparation, and assisting team as needed.

* Maintains timely and accurate patient EMR documentation.


Compliance/Safety
* Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Practices in a safe and cost effective manner.

* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.

* If required for position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.

* Responsible for reporting any safety related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

Qualifications

Education

Must be enrolled into a BSN program within 1 year from date of acceptance and obtain within 3 years of employment.

Experience

Specialty Lead RN:
Minimum of one (1) year experience as an RN- Preferred

Specialty Lead RN - Operating Room:
Minimum of one (1) year experience as an RN - Preferred


Minimum of 2 years cath lab, endovascular, vascular experience - Required


Specialty Lead RN CVOR:
1 year CVOR Experience - Required
