Overview

The Director of Financial Operations, Controller is responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of accounting processes, controls and reports. S/he oversees General Accounting functions, as well as Accounts Payable and Payroll, and maintains policies and procedures. The Director manages the department staff and develops department specific capital and operational budgets. S/he facilitates and coordinates activities in preparation for periodic audits by external organizations and acts as immediate contact with organization's independent external auditors on accounting matters.

Responsibilities

Communication
* Interprets operating results as they affect the financial aspects of the organization and communicates them to the CFO and others in the organization as appropriate, as well as presents them to the Senior Operating Team on a monthly basis and the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors on a quarterly basis.
* Communicates with all levels of management regarding fiscal policies and provides direction.
* Helps clinical leaders understand pro formas and financial projections as part of the Planning process.
* Timely completion of employee evaluations in coordination with organizational expectation. 
 
Department Management
* As a director of the organization, approves check requests and/or other documents assigned by management within the appropriate signing limits.
* Oversees monthly reviews and signs-off on significant (>$1m) balance sheet reconciliations.
* Responsible for annual submission of not-for-profit tax applicable to IRS 990 & 990-T information returns.
* Responsible for financial projections, pro formas and budgeting as part of the Financial Planning process.
* Responsible for the annual Medicare Cost Report filing as well as the annual external audit
 
Financial Management
* Responsible for the timely and accurate submission of financial statements based on Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) submitted prior to Close Call and Finance Committee meetings.
* Oversees regular update of organizational Fixed Assets and has working knowledge of AHA & HFMA depreciation best practice.
* Assists Financial Planning in the development of the annual operating budgets.
* Responsible for all General Ledger, Accounts Payable and Payroll activities of the organization
 
Strategic Development
* Responsible for development and revision of accounting policies to comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, tax requirements, SEC requirements, and management reporting requirements.
* Assumes responsibility for accounting classifications of all revenue and expenses, capital items, and other balance sheet accounts.
* Directs the preparation of periodic and yearly financial statements, including Senior Operating Team and Board packets as requested.
* Responsible for establishing internal accounting controls and procedures.
* Acts as liaison with the organization's independent external auditors on accounting matters. 
 
Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.
* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.
* If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
 
 

Qualifications

Education: 

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance- Required

Master's Degree- Preferred

 

Experience: 

5 years minimum experience in Healthcare related accounting - Required
(10 years preferred)

5 years minimum experience in management (direct supervision mandatory) – Required

3 years Public Accounting with auditing emphasis - Preferred
Experience with computers and accounting software - Required
Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.

 

Certification and Licensure: 

Active Certified Public Accountant (maintained through continuing education) – Preferred
