The Lead Mammographer/Breast Imaging Technologist position performs various mammography related procedures including screenings and diagnostic studies while providing leadership to staff. In addition to providing basic patient care, maintaining equipment, transporting patients, and creating and maintaining documentation, this position serves as a procedure specialist and leads a team of technologists in Mammography.


This position's work location is on-site only.

Responsibilities

Leadership
* Provide team leadership to staff in the department.

* Act at a resource and first point of escalation resource to address the needs of staff, patients and families.

* Serve as a procedure specialist and subject matter expert on modality and its process and procedures.

* Acts as the day-to-day lead for operations of the department and assures efficient operation of workflow of the department.

* Responsible for maintaining the work schedule, workflow and staff schedules for the department.

* Participates in the hiring process, performance evaluation and handling of issues, and in problem solving for the team.


Patient Care
* Obtains patient history.

* Educates patients/families regarding procedures and/or treatment to be performed as well as risk factors and prevention.

* Positions patients appropriately for the applicable radiographic procedure.

* Performs radiographic procedures and analysis according to departmental guidelines.

* Develops and evaluates radiographic results for technical quality, such as density, contrast, definition and distortion.

* Applies learned methodologies with independent judgment according to established policies and procedures.

* Performs prescribed procedures in accordance with established policies.

* Maintains infection prevention standards.

* Explains standard procedures and answers patients questions.

* Prepares, cleans, adjusts, inspects and maintains equipment.

* Produces quality images and prepares/presents them with other pertinent patient information for timely interpretation.

* Prepares and maintains accurate documentation, archiving imaging data as needed or required.

* Collaborates with physicians and other medical professionals.


Modality Specific
* Prepares patient and equipment for mammography procedure.

* Positions patient throughout the procedures, adjusting immobilization devices for proper compression.

* Performs radiologic mammography exams, including screenings and diagnostic studies, and analysis.

* May participate in the performance of advanced mammography procedures such as stereotactic biopsies, clip placements, drainages.

* Coordinates mammography procedures and performs Quality Control tasks related to mammography.

* Provides Self-Breast Exam education to the patient.

* Performs minor surgical techniques in assistance to the radiologist, using sterile technique.

* Positions and handles patients with a high degree of safety and professionalism.

* Provides protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards and sets up and adjusts radiation protective shielding required for maximum protection in accordance with appropriate report of the National Council on Radiation Protection relating to medical use of ionizing radiation and appropriate state laws.

* Determines and selects proper electronic and technical factors which safeguard the patient, x-ray tube and equipment.

* Maintains an awareness of the patients physical and emotional condition, recognizing and reporting any adverse reactions.

* Controls a variety of complex equipment to apply ionizing radiation for radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures, and may control ultrasound and stereo biopsy equipment as well.

* Operates all equipment with a high degree of proficiency, which includes but is not limited to radiographic and fluoroscopy units and accessories, portable equipment and ultrasound equipment.

* Directs and practices sterile technique to prevent cross-contamination of disease.

* Interviews patients and performs record keeping functions to include, but not be limited to assuring accurate information on patient films following the ACT/MQ guidelines where applicable, assuring accurate information on patient file folders, and assuring accurate and complete information on patient history sheets.

* Informs patients of negative exam results as requested by the radiologists.

* Completes patient consent forms for interventional exams as required.

* Hangs patient mammograms on the viewer assuring all required documentation has been obtained in an accurate and timely manner.



Quality
* Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

* Performs and evaluates equipment quality control measurements, demonstrating ability to troubleshoot and notifying appropriate personnel to maintain equipment performance.

* Assures the efficient operation of workflow of the department and monitors and maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and materials to ensure non-interruption of service.

* Assigned to be a Quality Control Technologist for the Equipment and Processor, reporting any malfunction and equipment problems to the supervisor of the facility.

* Performs Quality Control monitoring of equipment as assigned in accordance with ACR/MQSA.

* Follows established film processing procedures and techniques.

* Performs Quality Control monitoring of processor unit as assigned in accordance with ACR/MQSA.

* Participates in required training for compliance related activities (HIPAA, Compliance, Patient Safety, TJC, other regulatory bodies.

* Participates and contributes to quality improvement processes and unit meetings/activities.

* Participates in compliance related activities (HIPAA, Compliance, Patient Safety, TJC, other regulatory bodies).



Education
* Keeps updated on the knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and imaging equipment.

* Educates patients/families regarding procedure and/or treatment to be performed as well as risk factors and prevention.

* Participates in creating and sustaining a learning environment supported by evidenced based practice and research.

* Participates in the mentoring and education of technologists and students.

* Works with peers and other health care providers. Participates in ongoing in-service and educational seminars.

* Assists with the orientation and training of new staff.



Compliance/Safety
* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.

* If required for position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.

* Responsible for reporting any safety related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

Qualifications

Education
Completion of a 24 month approved radiographic technology program or equivalent - Required


Applied Associates of Science degree in Radiological Technology - Preferred

 

Bachelor's of Radiology or Science - Preferred

 


Certification & Licensures

Current registry as a Mammography Technologist - Required


Meets ACR Certification criteria - Required


MRTBE Mammography- Required


BLS (American Heart Assoc.)- Required

 

Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.

 


Experience
Minimum 3 years experience as a Mammography Technologist - Required


Breast biopsy experience - Required


Minimum 1 year experience as a Lead - Preferred


Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
