Overview

The Pharmacy Technician 3 performs technical, clerical, and distributive pharmacy functions under the direction of a licensed pharmacist. S/he is cross-trained and able to perform the duties of every support staff position including IV technician and overnight shift technician.

Responsibilities

Patient Care
* Performs basic calculations for order processing with accuracy.

* Communicates with patient care units to ensure efficient medication distribution.

* Aseptically prepares total parental nutrition solutions, injectable chemotherapy, antibiotics, and other medications for injectable therapy if/when trained.

* Provides training and supervision of sterile and non-sterile compounding by staff while ensuring compliance with regulation and exceptional quality to ensure safety of product for patient use.

* Performs bulk compounding and repackaging activities in accordance with generally accepted pharmacy guidelines (USP795, USP 800, GS1 Supply Chain Standards, Local, State and Federal rules and regulations).

* Delivers medications to patient care units and processes returns.

* Processes floor stock including automated distribution and stock carts.

* Provides general assistance and support to pharmacist staff including filling orders, answering phones and preparing labels.

* Restocks pre-hospital care boxes and other kits.

* Fills unit dose carts or ADMs for patient medication distribution.

 
Administrative
* Operates a multi-line telephone device, monitors fax requests, reviews voicemail messages, responds to emails.

* Processes, submits, receives and distributes wholesale orders.

* Assures ADT (Admission, Discharge and Transfer) notification handling.

* Processes patient charges and credits.

* Distributes and processes controlled substances appropriately.

* Assists new technicians with their orientation and training.

* Possesses advanced knowledge of pharmacy systems as applicable depending on base facility they work in.

* Provides training and mentorship of new employees in pharmacy operations and hospital and pharmacy department policies and procedures.

* Demonstrates leadership skills in ability to delegate tasks to appropriate personnel, educate staff within and outside of the department, identify and solve potential problems.

* Fills in for appropriate support position areas.

* Maintains knowledge of downtime procedures and provides leadership during downtimes.

* Performs minor troubleshooting on pharmacy automation and takes initiative to contact vendors for support, as necessary.

* Implements and evaluates the use of new technologies, policies, and procedures.

* Ensures appropriate waste control throughout the drug delivery system.

* Serves as a liaison between support staff, professional staff (pharmacists), and department management.

* Performs basic tasks of other support staff and offers to assist as needed.

 
Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.

* Ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.

* Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures, in a safe and cost-effective manner.

* Completes assigned station checks thoroughly to remove expired inventory each month as needed.

* Demonstrates initiative to maintain and enhance knowledge and skills required for the unit.

* Demonstrates working knowledge of pharmacy law pertaining to the control, monitoring, and distribution of medications including controlled substances.

Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or GED- Required

 


Certification & Licensures
Licensed with State Board of Pharmacy- Required

 

Certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board- Required

 


Experience
Minimum of 1 year Pharmacy Technician experience in a hospital setting- Required

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
