Overview

Performs technical, clerical and distributive pharmacy functions under the supervision and direction of a licensed pharmacist.

Responsibilities

Patient Care
* Performs prescription order entry and basic calculations for order processing with accuracy.

* Communicates with patient care units to ensure efficient discharge medication delivery.

* Delivers discharge medications to patient care units and contacts the pharmacist for counseling.

* Provides general assistance and support to pharmacist staff including filling orders and preparing labels.

* Submits electronic orders to request prescription refill or prior authorization assistance.

* Communicates with patients to provide an update on the prescription status when issues are encountered.

* Alerts pharmacist when OTC recommendation is required.

* Demonstrated the ability to utilize pharmacy technology products such as electronic health records, automated dispensing machines, and unit dosing.
 
Administrative
* Operates a multi-line telephone device, monitors fax requests, reviews voicemail messages, responds to emails and manages the will call report.

* Processes, submits, receives and distributes wholesale orders.

* Distributes controlled substances appropriately.

* Audits and tracks inventory to prevent excess or correct discrepancies.

* Helps fill prescriptions and its storage.

* Processes patient charges and credits.

* Counts the money at the point of sale system at the end of the day.

* Completes closing procedures as needed.

* Collaborates with the department manager and other pharmacy staff on all aspects of quality improvement of pharmacy services.
 
Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.

* If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.

* Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures, in a safe and cost-effective manner.

* Completes assigned station checks thoroughly to remove expired inventory each month as needed.

* Demonstrates initiative to maintain and enhance knowledge and skills required for the unit.

Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or GED- Required
 
Certification & Licensures
Licensed with State Board of Pharmacy- Required

Certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board- Required
 
Experience
3 months to 1 year- Preferred

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
