Overview

Ensuring the achievement of the Northern Arizona Healthcare's mission, the Neonatal Flight Nurse is accountable for the coordination of care for patients and their families, including direct care, patient and family education, discharge planning and highly skilled and professional emergency care to neonates while in flight. When providing care, Neonatal Fight Nurses follow the process of assessing, nursing diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementing and evaluation as the basis of the delivery of care. The Neonatal Flight Nurse provides leadership for ancillary personnel by being the team leaders, serving as a preceptor and being an active member of the healthcare team. She/he must be able to function independently of medical control on the scene or when communication is difficult. The Nurse practices within the ANA Scope of Practice, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and the standards of his/or her specialty

Responsibilities

Patient Care
* Assesses the needs and conditions of patients by gathering relevant patient health information.

* Identifies outcomes, develops a plan of care individualized to the patient and/or situation and implements the identified plan appropriate for the attainment of the expected outcomes.

* Assesses patient's progress toward attainment of outcomes and effectively revises/updates diagnoses, outcomes and plans of care as appropriate.

* Contributes to patient experience by providing quality and safe patient care by respecting patients privacy, and treating all patients, family members, and guests as well as other associates with dignity, respect and compassion.

* Monitors/evaluates patient conditions frequently and adapts plan of care appropriately.

* Preforms aseptic techniques by maintaining a sterile field while using principles of disinfection, sterilization, and infection control.

* Maintains infection prevention standards.

* Collaborates with physicians and other health care professionals.

* When in the unit assists as necessary with procedures (central line placement, chest tube insertions, x-rays, ultrasounds, intubations and extubations.)

* When in on scene or in flight proficiently preforms life saving interventions, including but not limited to, advanced airway management, endotracheal intubations, ventilator management, chest decompression, etc.

* Assesses ability of the parents of care for their infant and self once discharged and communicates family needs to appropriate care providers.

* Maintains strong fundamental knowledge of pharmacological agents and ability to safely administer all medications including vasoactive medications, sedatives, paralytics, etc.

* Provides Family Centered Care and Family Integrated Care.

* Demonstrates basic Breastfeeding education and support skills in caring for families.
 
Comunication while in flight
* Inspects and assures all equipment and supplies are present and in proper working condition on the aircraft and at the base daily and following each transport.

* Responsible for reporting and returning broken equipment to appropriate facility for repair.

* Collaborates with GAT Employees, Referring and Receiving Hospital Staff, EMS, etc.

* Works in collaboration with GAT Employees, Referring and Receiving Hospital Staff, EMS, etc.
 
Equipment Management
* Ensures proper function of NICU monitoring systems, pumps, and other equipment.

* Inspects and assures all equipment and supplies are present and in proper working condition on the aircraft and at the base daily and following each transport.

 
Education
* Participates in creating and sustaining a learning environment supported by evidenced based practice and research.

* Focuses on personal developmental areas, engaging in professional/collegial interactions with peers and students.

* Works collaboratively with peers and other health care providers, and participating in ongoing in-service and educational seminars.

* Participated in the mentoring and education of colleagues and students.

* Keeps abreast of neonatal emergency and critical care trends.

* Working knowledge of aviation and safety functions as a crewmember on Fixed and Rotor Wing aircraft.

* Promotes Guardian Air at PR events and in routine interactions with community, hospital staff, EMS, patients and families.
 
Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.

* If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.

* Maintains timely and accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, EMR entries, and patient responses.

* Complies wit ALL Infant Security policies and practices.

Qualifications

Education
RNs hired on or after 7/1/2016: Must graduate from a BSN program within 6 years of hire into an RN position.

Existing Staff RNs: RNs hired before 7/1/2016 are not mandated to have a BSN, but are encouraged to pursue a BSN degree.
 
Certification & Licensures
Active, unrestricted, Arizona RN License or valid, participating compact license- Required

BLS (American Heart Association)- Required

NRP - Required for RN's who provide direct care to newborns- Required

Advanced education in area of expertise with the following certification: RNC-NIC- within one (1) year of hire- Required

STABLE course - Required within one (1) year of hire

Current Driver's license in the state in which they reside with no moving violations within prior 36 months - Required
 
Experience
Three (3) years of neonatal critical care - Required

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
