Overview

The Mobile Phlebotomist is responsible for traveling to all NAH Laboratory client sites to perform venipuncture procedures, properly identify patients, properly label specimens, collection and receipt of specimens, proper lab order entry into the LIS computer system, processing and preparation of all specimen types and distribution of specimens to analytical testing areas. Other responsibilities include clerical aspects of post analytical testing and interacting and use a variety of communication tools with client staff. This position will also assist at the Northstar Laboratory Draw site when workload permits. Mobile phlebotomist must handle biohazardous and infectious material while following universal precautions and OSHA guidelines.

This position is located in NAH Laboratory Departments, the Northstar Laboratory Draw site and client facilities such as Aspire Transitional Care and The Peaks with the potential of gaining new outreach clients.

Responsibilities

Specimen Collection
* Performs phlebotomy procedures on young adults to geriatric patients.

* Patient preparation ensuring proper patient identification and specimen identification per NAH policy.

* Properly collects blood cultures according to the established procedures using aseptic techniques to prevent contamination.

* Collects blood bank specimens according to blood bank procedures.

* Performs infection control techniques using universal precautions.

* Confirms specimen and patient requirements prior to collection.

* Ensures specimen integrity by using appropriate techniques as required. (Ex. Protection from light and temperature control)

 
Processing
* Accessions specimens into LIS and entering appropriate date and time of collection and collector's Lawson.

* Properly distributes specimens within the laboratory departments.

* Uses two patient identifiers to correctly re-label specimens with Cerner generated labels per NAH policy.

* Stock and maintains all phlebotomy carts stationed at client sites.

* Checks all phlebotomy supplies at client sites for expiration dates.

* Manages patient draw lists from each client site and communicates with staff on any phlebotomy procedure situations. (Ex. Refusals, missed draws etc.)

* Aliquots and labels specimens according to established departmental procedures if needed.

* Checks quality of specimens and takes appropriate actions for unacceptable specimens.

* Recognizes and provides input towards process improvements, ideas on decreasing costs, improves customer services and productivity.

* Performs other technical support functions as determined by the laboratory.

 
Computer
* Navigates through Atlas to print laboratory requisitions and patient labels for client sites.

* Demonstrate the use of each applicable Cerner icons.

* Uses appropriate documentation to record communications.

* When appropriate, places orders into recollect with proper documentation.

* Correctly logs in specimens into correct laboratory department.

 
Compliance/Safety
* Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Practices in a safe and cost effective manner.

* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.

* If required for position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.

* Responsible for reporting any safety related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

Qualifications

Education
 
Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) - Required
 
Certification & Licensures
 
Valid US Driver's License and no moving violations for the previous 39 months - Required
 
National Phlebotomy Certification - Required
 
Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.
 
Experience
 
Minimum of 1 year experience in the Laboratory or Inpatient Hospital Setting - Required
