The Associate Controller and Reimbursement Services reports to the Director Financial Operations Controller and supports the Controller in leading the organization’s accounting policy interpretation, research, and implementation efforts. This role is responsible for analyzing complex net patient revenue trends and risks with related accounting considerations and interpretations. The role will provide guidance on GAAP compliance and serve as a subject matter expert on new and evolving accounting standards with an emphasis on net patient revenue. The incumbent in this role is expected to apply strategic thinking with deep technical expertise, strong communication skills, and a proactive approach to solving problems on a daily basis.

Responsibilities

People Management
* Direct the work of staff with respect to the daily technical accounting and reimbursements operations.
* Mentor and guide staff and junior team members; serve as a knowledge resource across the finance team.
* Conduct new hire selection and ensure successful training and understanding of processes and relevant accounting practices.
* Build and foster effective workflow and working relationships with Finance Operations and other relevant stakeholder departments and their staff and leadership.
* Provide and serve as the subject matter expert supporting the business and departments with adhoc reporting and information.
* Review and analyze team workload, continuously enhancing and assess efficiencies and process improvement.
* Conduct evaluations of staff performance, while providing positive feedback, goals, process improvement and needed education or training.
 
Technical Accounting and Reimbursements Management
* Oversee the development and maintenance of net revenue models by payer, service line, and entity
* Oversee and provide interpretation of monthly net revenue analyses and support the month-end close process across all entities within the healthcare system
* Analyze and provide interpretation of payer trends, including denials and collections to organization leaders
* Partner with the Revenue Cycle and Managed Care teams to assess and monitor payer contract performance and payment variances
* Lead research and resolve complex accounting issues, including but not limited to revenue recognition
* Partner with external auditors during audits and reviews, preparing technical memos and accounting position papers as needed.
* Oversee the preparation of Medicare Cost Reports.
 
Change Management
* Manages efforts to drive financial acumen and accountability across the organization.
* Assesses business and stakeholder readiness and develops communication and training plans and associated learning materials.
* Monitor industry trends, FASB developments, and best practices to keep the company current and compliant.
* Participates and leads change management efforts in functional area and helps drive results through implementing organizational change initiatives such as ERP project implementation and user training, and any other initiatives and projects necessitated by the business needs of the organization.
 
Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
* Assists in ensuring staff complies with standards as required by Appropriate Regulator Agencies, OSHA and other regulatory entities.
* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.
* Maintains current knowledge on health care trends, facility strategic plan, and department service needs.

 

Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance - Required
  • Master’s degree in accounting or related field - Preferred
 
Experience
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including a mix of public accounting and corporate accounting - Required
  • Deep technical knowledge of U.S. GAAP - Required; experience with IFRS -Preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess complex issues and communicate solutions clearly – Required
  • Experience managing projects across cross-functional teams - Required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear technical memos - Required
  • Highly organized with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities - Required
  • Experience in a public company environment or regulated industry (e.g., healthcare, financial services, tech) - Preferred
  • Familiarity with financial reporting systems (e.g., Lawson, Oracle, SAP, or similar) - Preferred 
 
Certification & Licensures
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) - Required
